The black telephone receiver warmed Frederic's ear. The office was a damp little square, with bare concrete walls. He half stood and half sat upon a chunky, oak desk that faced a blinded window. It was regular for him to ring Matilda several times throughout a long night. The soft buzz of her voice down the line trembled through his head and caused tiny vibrations across his heavy eyelids that teased him with sleep.
"No, no, I'm still here. No I'm not dropping off."
Frederic balanced the receiver between his neck and shoulder. He bent over and retied his boot lace
